Quilting

Although I have an appreciation for art quilts, it's the geometry of pieced quilting that really tugs at my heart and asks me to make things. The background of this page is the quilt "Stars for a New Day", offered as a Block of the Month for 2009 on TheQuiltShow.com. It was made to hang on the wall of my house in Colorado, and southwestern colors and themes were chosen for it.

The Big Bang. Included in this swirlly quilt is a cross-stitched Eagle spaceship and the planet Earth. swirl quilt
Stars for a New Day Quilt, made in 2009. Much of this is paper pieced, a technique I had not tried before. Stars for a New Day Quilt
Three years in the making, this quilt was made for my in-law's 50th anniversary. I asked my mother-in-law to go through pictures and let me scan pictures for a family history website. Then I used those pictures-- from their wedding, their high school pictures, confirmation pictures, pictures of all the houses they've lived in, their son, their grandchildren-- to make this quilt. It's hand quilted and machined pieced with the pictures ironed on to white muslin. I spend the first year gathering the pictures, one year piecing and assembling, and then the third year doing the hand quilting. It was finished in time for their anniversary in 2003

A challenge x2

The quilt shop on Sanibel Island, "3 Crafty Ladies" issued a challenge in Summer 2001. They sent you a half yard of material and you had to make a quilt and include it. I loved the idea and was amazed at the material sent. I couldn't figure out how something with colors I loved could be so unattractive. So I cut it into tiny pieces. Then I pulled out some fabric I bought while visiting my friend Merideth in Ohio. It looks like warped space with all these geometric figures. She had challenged me to use it and I hadn't figured ot what to do with it. Of course, I had all sorts of space and stars material lying around. And voila, here it is. I call it Farscape, because the colors together remind me of the sf show by that name.

Gemstone Quilt

These are from a book about making quilts from jelly rolls. It's very easy to do, and I think it looks great. And it also looks completely different when done in 3 colors rather than with a jelly roll. I'm going to make more of these.

Another Anniversary quilt for my parents. Made for their 50th anniversary in 2006. Their anniversary was December 22, so a Christmas theme was appropriate and Mama's favorite color was red, so that makes it even more appropriate. Mason anniversaryMason 50

Shop Hop Quilts

Linda and I have been on several Florida shop hops where they had Florida themed blocks. These were cute and fun to make.

Railroad Quilt

I made this for Tike when he was 2, and we play with it a lot. I'd love to have one with roads, but haven't found the right material.
